MY SON, HUNTER WITH ONE OF HUNTER’S PUPS.
WHEN I STARTED HUNTING RABBITS, I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE INTRODUCED TO LARRY NAYLOR OF MEDON, TN. HE SET ME UP WITH A PACK OF 4 BEAGLES THAT COULD RUN A RABBIT VERY WELL. AFTER RUNNING THEM THROUGH HUNTING SEASON, I TOLD LARRY THAT MY SON REALLY WANTED A MALE PUP TO WORK WITH & MY SON WANTED TO NAME HIM “HUNTER” BECAUSE THAT WAS MY SON’S MIDDLE NAME. LARRY WAS KIND ENOUGH TO LET US GET “HUNTER”. I HAD NO IDEA WHAT I WAS GETTING MY HANDS ON BACK IN 2003.
HUNTER IS AN EXTREMELY GREAT DOG. HE JUMPS HIS SHARE OF RABBITS, HITS THE THICK STUFF EVERY TIME OUT, & IS AN AWESOME CHECK DOG WITH A VERY DISTINCTIVE LOUD MOUTH. HE IS AS BROKE AS A BEAGLE CAN BE & HAS TOLD ON SEVERAL TRASH RUNNERS IN THE PAST. HE HANDLES LIKE A DREAM, KEEPS HIS EARS & TAIL BLOODY FROM HUNTING BUT THE ONE THING HE DOES BETTER THAN ANY BEAGLE I HAVE EVER OWNED IS “HUNTER” IS A RETRIEVING MACHINE. SEVERAL PEOPLE HAVE WITNESSED THIS & CAN’T BELIEVE THAT HE RETRIEVES SO WELL.
HUNTER WAS NOT TRAINED TO DO THIS. IT WAS JUST IN HIM TO RETRIEVE. WHEN THEY DO IT NATURALLY IT IS NOT ALL THAT COMMON SO TO SAY HE’S A SPECIAL DOG IS PUTTING IT MILDLY.
HUNTER WAS ABOUT 18 MONTHS OLD WHEN HE RETRIEVED HIS FIRST RABBIT. HE’S BEEN DOING IT EVER SINCE. THIS IS SO VALUABLE TO HAVE WHEN YOU SHOOT & WOUND A RABBIT. A LOT OF BEAGLES WILL FIND IT, LEAVE IT LAYING THERE & YOU WONDER IF IT HOLED UP OR YOU MISSED IT OR SOME BEAGLES WILL EAT EVERY RABBIT THEY GET TO. I DON’T HAVE THAT PROBLEM. I DO NOT OWN A BEAGLE THAT WILL EAT THE RABBIT. I HAVE OTHER BEAGLES THAT HAVE RETRIEVED BUT “HUNTER” IS THE BEST.
THANKS AGAIN, LARRY FOR SUCH A GREAT DOG. MY SON & I REALLY ENJOY HIM.
I HAVE STARTED DOGS FOR SALE OUT OF “HUNTER” FROM TIME TO TIME.
*** On 1/7/13 we found Hunter in his dog house. He had died in his sleep at 9.5 years old. My son & I cried like babies at our loss but we will always have his blood here in our kennels so his spirit hunts on in his offspring. To read more check out my blog……Hunter Gone But Not Forgotten
